Press Release for Week 8.........13/06/2008

Week 8...

Week 8 of the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League for the South Warwickshire & District Area saw previously joint second Littleton bizarly throw away any chance of challenging the Champions Stratford as they failed to turn out a side against fellow joint second side Inkberrow. This is the first time a Premier club side has been fined and defaulted a match 4-0 for a long time and means Inkberrow and possibly Evesham are now Stratford’s only challenge this season. All this, in a week when Stratford have no fixture, means that Inkberrow close the gap to 5 points. Evesham visited Stratford to play their B Team and emerged with a 2-2 draw which means they trail Stratford by 7 and Stratford B move up to joint fourth spot with Littleton. The only other fixture was a relegation battle between the bottom to clubs Moreton and Inkberrow B from which Moreton took the honours in a 3-1 victory.

Evesham just kept in touch with the top two after their 2-2 draw with Stratford B. They opened with a defeat as Simon Wall & Andrew Crowther went down 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, in a hum-dinger of a contest to Mark Parsons & Paul Crowcombe (Stratford B). However, they came back to defeat Ed Bosley & Martin Lister (Stratford B) 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile Evesham team mates Chris Francis & Ray Foster-Morison went the other way first beating Bosley & Lister 6-2, 6-2, before losing to Parsons & Crowcombe 2-6, 3-6.

Moreton-in-the-Marsh visited Inkberrow B this week and Gary Jackson & Ian Merriman (Moreton) won both their rubbers beating Ashley Baldwin & Tim Kenneally (Inkberrow B) 6-3, 6-3, and beat Mark Rawling & Paul Smith (Inkberrow B) 6-2, 7-6. Jim Gosling & Brian Lomas (Moreton) Rawling & Smith 6-1, 7-5, but lost to Baldwin & Kenneally 7-6, 1-6, 3-6.

In Division One leaders Chipping Campden were held to a 2-2 draw by second placed Henley- in-Arden to leave the top of the table unchanged. Previously third placed FISSC of Stratford were inexplicably beaten 4-0 by bottom but one side Claverdon with only Matt Baker & Henry Courey putting up any resistance. This gave the winners of Whitnash -v- Ardencote Manor the opportunity to claim that third place which Whitnash took with a 4-0 victory. Mid-table Bidford-on-Avon could only manage a 2-2 draw against bottom side Tanworth-in-Arden. Finally, the rubber stopped the previous week betwwe Whitnash and Henley was completed resulting in Henley gaining the extra point by beating Whitnash 7-5 in the final set.

In a shock result runaway leaders of Division 2 Alcester were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom but one side Littleton B, but still lead the table by 6 points. Studley clawed two points back on the leaders after they easily dispensed with third placed Pershore 4-0 in straight sets. Mid-table Alcester B were surprised to be held to a 2-2 draw when they visited bottom side Aston Cantlow. Just above the relegation battle HDA entertained Stratford C on their Redditch courts with HDA enjoying a good 3-1 win.

Division Three is developing into an incredibly tight table with only three points at this stage dividing the 8 teams from promotion or relegation. The major match of the week was between top side Snitterfield and fourth placed Harbury who previously trailed them by 2 points but with a game in hand. The result a resounding 4-0 victoty to Snitterfield meant they now lead the table. Second placed Shipston-on-Stour lost out sensationally 1-3 to bottom but one Claverdon B in a week full of surprises. This result allowed FISSC B the opportunity to overtake Shipston if they could take points off Ilmington. This they did in a 2-2 draw which took FISSC B into second spot. Finally in Division Three Studley B and Campden B shared the points in a 2-2 draw.

With Divisions 4 and 5 enjoying a free week the only result was from a replayed previously rained off Division 5 match between Shipston B and HDA B in which Shipston B romped home 4-0.
