Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release 07/06/2008

Week 7 - half way there!

The half way mark for the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League for the South Warwickshire & District Area finds Stratford-on-Avon romping away at the top of the league and already looking a certainty to retain their title. They moved a massive 9 points clear at the top of the Premier Division after they defeated previously second placed Littleton 4-0. Inkberrow who are equal second on points also lost ground as they had no match last week. Meanwhile Stratford B took bottom placed Inkberrow B to the cleaners 4-0 and the match between Evesham and Inkberrow A was rained off.

Despite their captain Tim Page absent and playing away from home, Stratford romped home against nearest rivals Littleton. Simon West paired up with Tim’s replacement Richard Monk and still managed maximum points as they beat Graham Lawrence & Zak Wilson (Littleton) 6-0, 7-6, and then beat Elliott Barrett & Chris Elliott (Littleton) 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile on the other court Stratford’s other pair Graham Marsh & Chris Marrow also eased past the opposition defeating first Barrett & Elliott 6-1, 6-4, and then Lawrence & Wilson 6-2, 6-1.

Later that week at the Swans Nest Lane courts, Stratford B played hostile hosts to Inkberrow B as the home side soundly beat Inkberrow 4-0. Stratford captain Nick Harper & Chris Cotteral beat Tim Kenneally & Chris Francis (Inkberrow B) 7-6, 6-3, and then defeated Ashley Baldwin & Chris Baker 7-5, 6-3. Mark Parsons & Gary Scruby (Stratford B) overcame Ashley Baldwin & Chris Baker 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 and then beat Tim Kenneally & Chris Francis 6-3, 6-4.

Division One leaders Chipping Campden extended their lead to 5 points at the top after they enjoyed a great 4-0 win over third placed Ardencote Manor who dropped a place on this result. Henley stay second after taking a 2-1 lead over Whitnash before bad light stopped play. FISSC moved into third spot after a 2-2 draw with Bidford who also move up a place. Bottom two Claverdon and Tanworth drew 2-2.

Alcester took a commanding 8 point lead at the top of Division Two when they overpowered second placed Studley with an emphatic 4-0 victory. Two other matches between HDA versus Pershore and Stratford C against Alcester B ended up as 2-2 draws. The final fixture between Aston Cantlow and Littleton B was rained off.

In Division Three rain was the main victor causing the fixtures between Harbury and Ilmington and Studley B versus Shipston to be postponed. This gave Snitterfield the opportunity to overtake Shipston at the top which they did following a 3-1 win over Chipping Campden B. FISSC B also took their chance to leap over Harbury into third place with a 2-2 draw shared with Claverdon B. Claverdon B also picked up a couple of extra points by completing their match which had been postponed the previous week with bad light at 1-1 with Studley B. They went on to beat the Studley side 3-1.

Like many in the divisions above Inkberrow C opened up a substantial 7 point gap heading Division 4 helped in no small way with a convincing 4-0 victory over second placed Bidford B. With middle team sides Claverdon C and Moreton-in-the-Marsh B being rained off, the only remaining fixture in Division 4 saw the bottom two sides, Littleton C and Henley B draw 2-2.

The top three teams in Division Five, Shipston B, Inkberrow D and Alcester C respectively all won by a 3-1 scoreline. Shipston B over Campden C, Inkberrow D at the expense of Bidford C and Alcester C also over bottom placed Chipping Campden C. The match between Shipston B and HDA B was postponed due again to rain.
