Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release 31/05/2008

Week 6

The results for week 6 in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League for the South Warwickshire & District Area saw Stratford-on-Avon, who had retained the Championship for the last five years, open up a 5 point gap at the top of the league. They did this despite being held to a 2-2 draw by fourth placed Evesham who with this result stopped Stratford from recording their fifth successive win. Meanwhile second placed Littleton and third placed Inkberrow failed to gain on Stratford after they also both drew. Littleton were surprisingly held by bottom placed Inkberrow B, while Inkberrow A drew with fifth placed Moreton-in-the-Marsh.

Evesham did well to record their third draw of the season although they were helped by some fortune. Stratford’s James Smith partnering Rob Slatter began the match carrying an injury which restricted his play and as a result they went down 1-6, 3-6 to Evesham’s Simon Wall & Chris Francis. The injury then forced Smith to retire from the second round of rubbers defaulting 0-6, 0-6 to Julian Heath & Anatoli Phoarsa (Evesham). It was left to the Stratford captain Tim Page & partner Simon West to battle through for a draw as they beat Heath & Phoarsa 6-2, 6-4 and then just edged past Wall & Francis 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 to keep Stratford’s unbeaten record this season intact.

Littleton were taken unawares by a very strong Inkberrow B pairing of Ashley Baldwin & Chris Baker whose performance belied their position at the foot of the Pemier Division. The Littleton B pair won both their rubbers beating Elliott Barrett & Zak Wilson (Littleton) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and then beating Sean Witheford & Chris Elliott (Littleton) 6-4, 6-4. Inkberrow B’s second pair Tim Kenneally & Craig Weedon were unable to emulate this performance going down to Witheford & Elliott 1-6, 4-6, and also losing to Barrett & Wilson 2-6, 4-6.

Inkberrow A similarly found themselves under attack, although less of a surprise, from Moreton-in-the-Marsh. Their determination in getting a 2-2 draw meant that all three Premier Division fixtures finished as draws.

Division One leaders Chipping Campden stay top after they defeated Whitnash 3-1. Henley-in-Arden overtake Ardencote Manor to claim second spot when they blasted bottom placed Tanworth-in-Arden 4-0 in straight sets. In contrast Ardencote dropped to third after being soundly beaten 4-0 by FISSC. The NFU outfit from Stratford played some good tennis to move up from sixth to fourth place with this score. Their result meant that Bidford drop a place despite picking up points in a 2-2 draw with Claverdon.

Alcester stay at the top of Division Two where they enjoy a four point lead thanks to their 4-0 drubbing of foot of the table Aston Cantlow in straight sets. However, Studley made up four points on Alcester after playing some rain delayed matches and now move into second spot on 18 points. First Studley finished a match that they had previously trailed 1-2 to Pershore. They won the remaining postponed rubber to gain the extra point in a 2-2 draw. Astoundingly they then lost 1-3 to Redditch side HDA who lay bottom but one in the table. Third placed Pershore gained a valuable 4-0 win over Stratford C while Alcester B hung onto fourth position after sharing a 2-2 draw with Littleton B.

In Division Three Shipston-on-Stour knocked Harbury from the top spot when they claimed a 3-1 victory over Chipping Campden B. Harbury were unexpectedly hammered 4-0 by FISSC B who move up two places to fourth with this result. Snitterfield moved up to third despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Ilmington. Finally in Division Three Studley B and Claverdon were 1-1 when bad light caused play to be halted.

In Division Four Inkberrow C lead by three points and completed a 3-1 win over Littleton C. Bidford B kept in contention but dropped a further point behind after being held to a 2-2 draw by mid-table Claverdon C. Moreton-in-theMarsh B overcame bottom team Henley B 3-1 to retain third place.

New leaders of Division Five are Shipston B who dominated Chipping Campden C team 4-0. Previous leaders Inkberrow D slip a point behind them after they dropped two points in their match with HDA B of Redditch who enjoyed their 2-2 draw which put them into third spot. Finally, Alcester C moved up to third by gaining 7 points this week. Firstly by beating Bidford C 3-1 and then by being awarded a 4-0 walkover HDA B in an earlier fixture in which HDA had failed to raise a team.
