Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release 25/05/2008

Week 5

The fifth week of fixtures in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League, for the South Warwickshire & District Area, saw Champions Stratford-on-Avon open up a four point lead at the top of the Premier Division, being the only team to claim a victory over challengers Inkberrow. Meanwhile the other side in contention Littleton had a week with no fixture and the other four teams all drew.

Inkberrow had been lying in third place three points off the top until their visit to Swans Nest Lane last week. They opened up well with a victory as Pete Watson & Alex Woodbridge managed to overcome Graham Marsh & Chris Marrow of Stratford 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and perhaps an upset could have been on the cards. However, Stratford’s captain Tim Page together with partner Simon West evened the score as they defeated Inkberrow’s Tim Price & Graham Rankin 7-5, 6-3. Page & West then went on to beat Watson & Woodbridge 7-6, 6-2, to edge Stratford in front. Marsh & Marrow confirmed a 3-1 win for Stratford as they beat Price and Rankin easily 6-0, 6-1 to pull clear at the top.

With second placed Littleton having a free week, fourth placed Evesham lost an opportunity when they only fielded two players against bottom placed Inkberrow B. With 2 rubbers awarded to their opponents Evesham could only draw 2-2. They did this when Chris Francis & Simon Wall won both their rubbers for Evesham beating first Mike Baker & Ashley Baldwin (Inkberrow B) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and then Tim Kenneally & Craig Weedon (Inkberrow B) 6-2, 6-2.

In the only other Premier Division fixture lowly placed Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Stratford B drew 2-2. Will Hale & Gary Jackson (Moreton) beat Paul Crocombe & Bill Fitford (Stratford B) 6-0, 6-2, and beat Nick Harper & Chris Cotteral 6-4, 6-2. Brian Lomas & Owain Thomas (Moreton) lost to Harper & Cotteral 2-6, 3-6, and lost to Crocombe & Fitford 2-6, 7-5, 5-7.

Division One stayed as you were with the top three teams Chipping Campden, Ardencote and Henley-in-Arden all recording victories. Campden thrashed FISSC of Stratford 4-0 while Ardencote easily saw off Tanworth also 4-0 and Henley just managed to defeat Bidford-on-Avon 3-1. Whitnash moved up to fourth after first beating Claverdon 3-1 and then taking two points from a 2-2 draw with Tanworth in a rain re-arranged fixture from week three. FISSC move down a place due to their 0-4 hammering by Campden despite winning 3-1 over Claverdon in another rain re-arranged match.

Alcester extended their lead at the top of Division Two to 6 points after another excellent emphatic 4-0 win over third placed Stratford C. Studley stay second although their match versus Littleton B was not played. Pershore and Alcester B stay mid table after they drew 2-2 with each other. Finally, bottom placed HDA Redditch change places with Aston Cantlow after they defeated them 3-1.

Division Three is still tight at the top. Harbury still lead Shipston by two points with the latter drawing 2-2 with FISSC B. However, Studley B move up to joint second despite losing 0-4 to Harbury when they beat Snitterfield 3-1 in a rain re-arranged match from Week 3. Ilmington slip out of fourth place after being surprisingly beaten by bottom team Campden B 3-1 and Snitterfield take their place after they dominated Claverdon 4-0.

Division Four is developing into a two team race. Inkberrow C head the table with 11 points after an excellent 4-0 result over previously third Claverdon C. Meanwhile Bidford B are still challenging two points adrift after a good 3-1 victory over Henley B. Moreton B move from last but one to third after beating mid table Littleton C 4-0.

In Division Five, Inkberrow D still lead the table with 9 points recording a 4-0 win over Alcester C. Shipston B stayed within a point after they demolished Bidford C 4-0. HDA B of Redditch move from bottom to third on 5 points after beating Campden C 3-1.
