Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release 15/05/2008

Week 4...

The end of the first month of fixtures in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League, for the South Warwickshire & District Area, saw Champions Stratford-on-Avon open up a two point lead at the top of the Premier Division, closely followed by Littleton who now position themselves three points ahead of their opponents Evesham this week. Stratford pulled away with a 4-0 win over newly promoted side Moreton-in-the-Marsh, while Littleton also forged ahead courtesy of a magnificent 3-1 victory over fourth placed Evesham. With bottom club Inkberrow B having a rest week the only other Premier match saw Inkberrow move into third place after beating Stratford B 3-1.

Littleton enjoyed a great win over a fancied Evesham outfit as captain Sean Witheford & partner Chris Elliott set the pace defeating Julian Heath & Andrew Crowther (Evesham) 6-1, 6-3. They then went on to beat Ray Foster Morison & Chris Francis (Evesham) 6-4, 6-1. Littleton’s Richard Herborn & Zak Wilson also claimed a straight sets win over Foster-Morison & Francis 6-3, 7-6, but were unable to complete a clean sweep as they were defeated by Heath & Crowther 6-1, 6-7, 3-6.

Stratford had no such problems as they proved too strong for the newcomers to the top division, although the opening match promised better things for Moreton. Chris Marrow & Graham Marsh for Stratford had difficulty in the opening rubber before finally getting the better of the Moreton pair captain Will Hale & Gary Jackson 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. They then eased past Bryan Lomas & Owain Thomas 6-2, 6-1. Stratford’s other pair captain Tim Page & partner Simon West breezed to victory in both their rubbers beating Lomas & Thomas 6-2, 6-1, and then Hale & Jackson 6-3, 6-0.

Inkberrow gained the upper hand in their match with Stratford B who now drop to last but one in the table. However, it was a struggle taking three of the four rubbers to three sets. Inkberrow pair Pete Watson & Graeme Rankin beat Chris Cotteral & Nick Harper (Stratford B) 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and then beat Richard Monk & Paul Crocombe 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Alex Woodbridge & Tum Price (Inkberrow) beat Monk & Crocombe 6-3, 6-3, but lost to Cotteral & Harper 6-1, 2-6, 2-6.

Division One sees a closer contest all round, although Chipping Campden kept their lead with a 3-1 win over lowly Claverdon. Ardencote enjoyed the win of the week as they demolished third placed Henley 4-0 to move up to second spot. Mid-table sides Bidford-on-Avon and Whitnash shared the honours in their 2-2 draw; while FISSC of Stratford managed a 3-1 victory over bottom placed Tanworth-in-Arden. The only consolation for the bottom four sides is that they all have a rained off match in hand.

Alcester stay top of Division Two after an emphatic 4-0 win over bottom placed HDA. Second stay Studley after they thumped mid-table Alcester B 4-0. A point further back sees Stratford C who also enjoyed victory at the expense of bottom but one placed Aston Cantlow. Finally, a mid table battle between Littleton B and Pershore saw the latter visitors emerge victorious 3-1.

In Division Three Harbury and Shipston still share the spoils after nothing could divide them in their top of the table clash as they drew 2-2. Studley B remain third but are now caught by Ilmington who move up to joint position with the Studley side after defeating them 3-1. Claverdon B lost ground after bottom placed Chipping Campden B held them to a 2-2 draw. Snitterfield move away from the bottom after they beat HDA of Redditch 3-1.

Division Four’s Inkberrow C move clear at the top after beating bottom placed Henley B 4-0. Bidford B, after several years in the doldrums, are enjoying their best start to a season as they stay only a point behind the leaders after their latest 3-1 victory over Moreton B. Mid-table sides Claverdon C and Littleton C shared a 2-2 draw.

In the newly formed Division Five, Inkberrow D lead the table despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Shipston B. Bidford C retain joint second place after another 2-2 draw, this time with Chipping Campden C. The final match between Alcester C and HDA B of Redditch was not played and is subject to a league investigation.
