Week 3...
 
 
The third week of fixtures in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League, for the South Warwickshire & District Area, saw previous leaders Evesham with a week off. This allowed Stratford-on-Avon to overtake them if they could beat sister side Stratford B. This they did comfortably to take over at the top of the Premier Division. Littleton move into second place after a 4-0 win over Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Inkberrow draw up the table to equal third with Evesham after they defeated their B team 4-0.

Stratford-on-Avon had an in family occasion at Swans Nest Lane as they met their sister side Stratford B. The A Team dominated in straights with the closest contest being the opening rubber which Graham Marsh and Chris Marrow took on a tie-break finish 6-4, 7-6, over Stratford B’s Richard Monk & Nick Harper. Stratford A captain Tim Page and partner Simon West defeated Lawrence Dingley & Paul Crocombe (Stratford B) 6-2, 6-4. After the change Page & West beat Monk & Harper 6-1, 6-2, and Marsh & Marrow beat Dingley & Crocombe 6-3, 6-0.

Inkberrow moved into a strong table position after seeing off their own B Team 4-0. It was a comfortable victory in straight sets although Inkberrow B tried hard to make a competition of it. Alex Woodbridge & Tim Price opened for Inkberrow A with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chris Baker & Ashley Baldwin (Inkberrow B). They then went on to beat Ricky Allen & Craig Weedon (Inkberrow B) 6-1, 6-3. On the other court Pete Watson & Graeme Rankin assured Inkberrow A of victory by beating Allen & Weedon 6-1, 6-3, and then Baker & Baldwin 6-1, 6-3.

Littleton enjoyed their first victory of their campaign 4-0 over Moreton-in-the-Marsh. This was Moreton’s first defeat in the Premier Division and they fought hard in a couple of rubbers to avoid a loss. However, the visitors from Littleton began well as Sean Witheford & Chris Elliott gave Littleton the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Brian Lomas & Gary Jackson (Moreton). The Littleton pair then beat Ian Merriman & Owain Thomas (Moreton) 6-0, 6-1. Richard Herborn & Zak Wilson for Littleton beat Merriman & Thomas 6-3, 6-2, but struggled before defeating Lomas & Jackson 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 on a tiebreak.


Division One saw Henley-in-Arden jump up the table to join leaders Chipping Campden. They did this with a comprehensive 4-0 home victory over FISSC Stratford. Campden were held to a 2-2 draw by Bidford who stay joint third. Ardencote join Bidford after they also drew 2-2 at home to Claverdon who despite this result stay bottom. The match between Tanworth-in-Arden and Whitnash was rained off and is to be played within 14 days.

Alcester open up a slight lead in Division Two after they beat their Alcester B Team 3-1. They have Studley in close attendance after they impressively got the better of Stratford C 3-1. Pershore move up to equal third after they overcame Aston Cantlow 3-1. Finally, Littleton B lift themselves off the bottom with a good 3-1 victory at home to HDA Redditch.

Division Three saw Harbury and Shipston hand on to joint top spot after they both drew 2-2, Harbury with mid-table Claverdon B, and Shipston also with a mid-table team Ilmington. FISSC B join Harbury and Claverdon B on 6 points after they beat Chipping Campden B 3-1. The match between Studley B and Snitterfield was rained off with Studley B leading 2-0 and will be completed within 14 days.

Division Four kicked off it’s season with wins for Bidford B 3-1 over Littleton C, Claverdon C also won 3-1 at the expense of Henley B, while Inkberrow beat Moreton B 3-1.

The newly formed Division Five began it’s season with some friendly draws. Alcester C and Shipston B shared the points in a 2-2 draw as did Bidford C and HDA B of Redditch. However, Inkberrow D claimed the early top spot by beating Chipping Campden C 3-1.
