Press Release 26/04/2008

Week 2...

The second week of fixtures in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League, for the South Warwickshire & District Area, saw Evesham retain their position at the top after a 2-2 draw with second placed Moreton-in-the-Marsh. Stratford came out of the blocks sprinting for their first summer league match as they thumped poor Inkberrow B 4-0 and in doing so move straight into third spot. Inkberrow slipped down the table with no points as they had a free week. Finally, Stratford B moved up to share fourth place with Littleton after beating them 3-1.

In the top contest of the week league leaders Evesham entertained newly promoted Moreton-in-the-Marsh with their confidence high. However, Moreton surprised Evesham providing stiff opposition which gained them a 2-2 draw. John Clarke & Simon Wall for the home side lost out to Will Hale & Gary Jackson (Moreton) 6-7, 2-6, before narrowly managing to redeem their performance by recovering with a victory over Jim Gosling & Owain Thomas (Moreton) 6-7, 6-0, 6-0. Andrew Crowther & Chris Francis for Evesham won their first rubber against Gosling & Owain 6-2, 6-2, but just lost out in their second rubber to the strong Moreton pair Hale & Jackson 7-6, 2-6, 1-6.

Current Champions Stratford-on-Avon played their first match of the summer season after a lay off in the first week with an emphatic victory over Inkberrow B. Their intention to retain the title was obvious as they decimated their unfortunate visitors in straight sets 4-0. Captain Tim Page & Simon West (Stratford) beat Tim Kenneally & Craig Weedon (Inkberrow B) 6-1, 6-0, and then beat Ricky Allan & Adam Smith (Inkberrow B) 6-0, 6-3. Chris Marrow & Graham Marsh (Stratford) overcame Allan & Smith 6-0, 6-1, and then Kenneally & Weedon 6-1, 6-0.

After a poor start last week Stratford B made up on some lost ground when they defeated Littleton
3-1. Heroes for Stratford were their captain Lawrence Dingley with partner Chris Cotteral who first defeated Sean Witheford & Chris Elliot (Littleton) 7-6, 6-2, and then Richard Herborn & Zak Wilson (Littleton) 7-5, 6-3. Paul Crocombe & Nick Harper for Stratford B beat Herborn & Wilson 7-5, 6-3, but lost in a close contest to Witheford & Elliot 4-6, 7-5, 1-6.

In Division One the early leaders Chipping Campden consolidated their lead with an excellent 4-0 result over Tanworth-in-Arden. Henley move up into second place after they also enjoyed a 4-0 win over near neighbours Claverdon. Ardencote and Bidford are third after drawing with each other 2-2. In the final Division One fixture of the week, FISSC, having been rained off last week, completed their first match with a 3-1 defeat of Whitnash at FISSC’s Stratford NFU courts. This result places them in fifth position. A result from the first week which was played too late to appear in last weeks report saw Ardencote and Whitnash share the spoils 2-2.

Joint opening leaders of Division Two Alcester and Stratford C maintained their position with hard fought 3-1 away wins against Pershore and Littleton B respectively. These results dropped Pershore to mid-table, and Littleton B to joint bottom. Studley moved up behind the leaders after they thrashed an ailing Aston Cantlow side 4-0 leaving Cantlow wallowing with two other sides at the bottom. The final fixture of the week saw Alcester B host the Redditch team HDA. The Alcester sides 3-1 triumph over HDA saw them share equal third place with Studley while HDA go joint bottom.

Division Three saw three joint leaders in Harbury, Shipston-on-Stour and Studley B. Harbury enjoyed the biggest win of the week away 4-0 to Chipping Campden B which means Harbury lead the division. Shipston also go top thanks to a 3-1 result at Snitterfield. Studley B retain their position as joint leaders but dropped points to FISSC B when they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. These results also meant that Campden B are rooted to the foot of the table without a point so far, with Snitterfield and FISSC B just three points above them. Claverdon B reversed their first week’s result as they beat Ilmington 3-1 leaving them both mid-table. Divisions Four and Five begin their fixtures next week.
