Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release for (Final) Week 14.........24/07/2008

Week 14...The END!

The end of another competitive season in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League drew to a close. The final week of the season saw Stratford celebrate their league championship title by beating Littleton 4-0 and in doing so confirmed their opponent’s relegation to Division One. It proved a dreadful night for Littleton who were allowed only 15 games in the match. Chief culprits were Stratford pair Graham Marsh & Chris Marrow who dropped only two games all night. They beat Chris Elliott & John Fielder (Littleton) 6-0, 6-1, and then beat Graham Lawrence & John Howard (Littleton) 6-0, 6-1. Stratford’s other pair Richard Monk & Nick Harper also had a comfortable victory over Lawrence & Howard 6-3, 6-3, but took three sets to beat Elliott & Fielder 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Evesham closed up on the runners-up spot held by Inkberrow when they defeated them 3-1, which left Evesham trailing by a single point. They have just a ‘rained-off’ match to play between the same two teams to decide who gets the runners-up medals. Incredibly with so much at stake, Inkberrow turned out only one pair and began the match 0-2 down after having to award Evesham 6-0 walk-overs in the the opening rubbers. In the matches that were played Inkberrow’s Graeme Rankin and Alex Woodbridge beat Andrew Crowther and Chris Francis (Evesham) 6-1, 6-1, but lost to John Clarke and Simon Wall (Evesham) 5-7, 7-6, 2-6. In the rearranged fixture Evesham again won 3-1. David Hubbard and Julian Heath (Evesham) beat Pete Watson & Graham Rankin (Inkberrow) 6-4, 6-3 and followed up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Inkberrow’s Simon Baker and Mark Rawling. Andrew Crowther and Ray Foster-Morison (Evesham) defeated Baker & Rawling 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 but lost to Watson & Rankin 1-6, 3-6. Evesham are confirmed as runners up.

In the final Premier Division Match Stratford B defeated relegated bottom club Inkberrow B by 3-1. Callum Bailey and Chris Cotterill (Stratford) defeated Chris Baker and Ashley Baldwin (Inkberrow) 6-0, 6-2 and followed this with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tim Kennealy & Ricky Allen (Inkberrow). Stratford’s Mark Parsons and Ed Bosley defeated Kenneally & Allen 6-1, 6-2 but lost to Baker & Baldwin 0-6, 2-6.

Chipping Campden were crowned as champions of Division One, despite only drawing with relegation threatened Ardencote Manor 2-2. This result took Ardencote one point above Bidford who were to play mid table FISSC in their last match. In this match Bidford recorded their first win of the season and a vital 3-1 victory over FISSC. The net effect is that they save themselves from the drop and doom Ardencote to relegation back down to Division Two next season. Henley-in-Arden clinched runners up medals after beating third placed Whitnash 3-1, but all three top teams are promoted to the Premier Division. The last Division One fixture saw relegated bottom team Tanworth-in-Arden defeated 3-1 by Claverdon.

Alcester celebrated they Division Two title and promotion and emphasised their supremacy with an emphatic 4-0 win over runners up Studley. Meanwhile, the battle between Pershore, HDA Redditch and Stratford C for the third promotion place was decided when Pershore drew their rain postponed match with Stratford C 2-2 and then blasted fourth placed HDA 4-0 to gain promotion. The last relegation place was being fought out between Alcester B, Stratford C and Littleton B. Stratford C got out of trouble with the previously mentioned draw in a re-arranged match and Littleton B did all they could to avoid the drop when they beat already relegated Aston Cantlow 4-0. However, with Alcester B level with Littleton and due to play Stratford C who they had drawn with earlier in the season the omens were not good. Alcester B duly defeated Stratford C by 3-1 which meant that Littleton B were relegated.

Snitterfield claimed the Division Three title and promotion even though they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegated Chipping Campden B. Although Harbury with a rain re-arranged game still to play could mathematically draw level on points, Snitterfield have a better head-to-head record. Shipston were lying second when they finished their season with a good 4-0 win over Studley but Harbury trailed by 2 points and with Claverdon B a further point back and due to face bottom team Studley B in their rain re-arranged match they could both overtake Shipston in the race for promotion. In the event Harbury drew 2-2 with FISSC B and Claverdon B also drew 2-2 with Studley B. This meant that Harbury and Shipston B will join Snitterfield in Division Two next season. At the bottom of Division Three Campden B and Studley B are relegated.

In Division Four Inkberrow C and Moreton B were the stand alone candidates for promotion. In their final match Inkberrow thrashed third placed Bidford B 4-0 to take the title by six clear points. Moreton also thoroughly beat their opponents Claverdon C 4-0 to finish second and also gain promotion a full twelve points above third placed Bidford who only had one rain re-arranged game to play against Claverdon C, which was subsequently drawn 2-2. Littleton C dominated their last match to beat Henley B 4-0 and claim fourth place. That left Henley B and Claverdon C relegated to Division Five next year.

Shipston B finished with a flourish to beat HDA B 4-0 and claim the Division Five title and promotion six points clear at the top. Alcester C and Inkberrow D were battling it out for the runners-up spot and to claim the other promotion place. Alcester C managed a 3-1 win over Chipping Campden C to lead Inkberrow D by three. Having better head-to-head results with Alcester, Inkberrow D hosted Bidford C in the last match of the season, needing three points to confirm second place. In the event they won comfortably by 4-0 and are rewarded with promotion.
