Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release for Week 13.........17/07/2008

Week 13

With the Penultimate week of fixtures in the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League for the South Warwickshire and district area many titles and promotion and relegation issues were settled. In the Premier Division Stratford claim the League Championship title for the sixth year in succession. They celebrated by beating third placed Evesham 3-1. Inkberrow stay in runners-up spot nine points behind Stratford but three points ahead of Evesham when their match against Moreton-in-the Marsh was drawn 2-2. In the final match Littleton defeated Inkberrow B 3-1, which dooms Inkberrow B to relegation to Division One, but keeps Littleton’s feint hopes of avoiding the drop alive. They trail Moreton by two points with four on offer in their last match of the season, but face Champions Stratford who beat them 4-0 in their last encounter.

Having lost their punch over the last month Stratford regained it with a venom to be crowned Champions again. Evesham were not going to lie down easily though and fought every game before Stratford gained their 3-1 victory. Captain Tim Page & partner Simon West led the way for Stratford again, as they have all summer, with victories over John Clarke & Chris Francis (Evesham) 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, and then over Simon Wall & Paul Everett (Evesham) 6-3, 6-3. Graham Marsh & Chris Marrow (Stratford) beat Wall & Everett 7-5, 6-1, but lost to Clarke & Francis 3-6, 2-6.

Moreton-in-the-Marsh did themselves a power of good and probably avoided relegation with their result against Inkberrow A. The 2-2 draw was mainly due to the power tennis of Will Hale & Gary Jackson (Moreton) who overcame Graham Rankin & Phil Scrafton (Inkberrow) 6-1, 6-1, & then beat Gordon Keir & Tim Price 7-6, 6-0. On the other courts Brian Lomas & Jim Gosling (Moreton) tried to emulate their team mates but went down 4-6, 6-4, 5-7 to Keir & Price and lost 1-6, 0-6 to Rankin & Scrafton.

In the final fixture Littleton, desperate to avoid relegation, beat Inkberrow B 3-1 but even this will not be enough unless they can at least draw with Champions Stratftford in the final week. Sean Witheford & Richard Herborn (Littleton) beat Chris Baker & Tim Kenneally (Inkberrow B) 6-3, 6-1 and beat Ashley Baldwin & Ricky Allen (Inkberrow B) 6-3, 6-1. Chris Elliott & Ian Smith (Littleton) beat Baldwin and Allen 6-3, 6-2, but lost to Baker & Kenneally 4-6, 7-6, 2-6.

Chipping Campden are declared Divison One champions after a terrific 4-0 victory over previously second placed Whitnash. Whitnash console themselves with the fact that they are guaranteed promotion to the Premier Division along with Henley-in-Arden and of course Campden. The latter cannot be caught at the top despite Henley moving up to second place after two 4-0 victories in a week as they have a better head to head record. Henley placed Ardencote in real relegation trouble when they beat them 4-0 in a rain re-arranged match. They then defeated Tanworth-in-Arden by the same margin and in doing so sent them down to Division Two next year. FISSC moved up to fourth with a 3-1 victory over Ardencote to add to their woes and Claverdon moved out of relegation worries and up to fifth after beating Bidford-on-Avon 4-0, the latter continuing their recent slide down the table .

Alcester claimed the Division Two title when they thrashed Aston Cantlow 4-0. This result also confirmed Cantlow’s demise into Division Three next year. Studley enjoyed a 3-1 win over Redditch side HDA and are guaranteed runners up spot and promotion to Division One. The third promotion spot is still up for grabs between third placed Pershore on 25 points but with a game in hand and HDA who trail them by a solitary point. Pershore’s match against Stratford C was rained off. Littleton B made up some ground on Alcester B in their attempt to avoid relegation when they defeated them 3-1. However their hopes rest on a long shot of taking maximum points in their last match and hope bottom side Aston Cantlow do the same against Alcester B.

Division Three leaders Snitterfield are confirmed promoted to Division Two after their latest 3-1 victory over Ilmington, but are not yet crowned with the title. They need two points or more from their last game or hope Shipston lose their final match to be sure. Meanwhile Shipston themselves moved up from fifth to second and only three points behind the leaders after they enjoyed two wins. The first was over bottom but one Campden B who are now relegated to Division Four. The second was an emphatic 4-0 spanking of bottom side Studley B who are also relegated. The other two promotion spots behind Snitterfield are being fought over by Shipston on 31 points, Claverdon B on 28 with a game in hand after their match was rained off this week, and Harbury on 25 who have two rained off matches in hand, including this week’s match with FISSC B.

Division Four leaders Inkberrow C took advantage of the fact that theirs was the only fixture in their division not to be rained off. They beat Littleton C 4-0 to claim the title and promotion as they now lead by an unassailable 10 points. This result leaves Littleton C perilously close to relegation with Claverdon C only trailing by a point and with a game in hand.

Only two matches were scheduled this week in Division Five, but they were important for the promotion race. Shipston B were already declared winners of Division 5 and are promoted, but Inkberrow D and Alcester C battle it out for the runners-up spot and the second promotion place. At the beginning of the week Inkberrow lay two points clear of Alcester and, playing bottom but one HDA B of Redditch, looked a good bet for clinching promotion. However, no-one had told HDA who upset the form book by beating Inkberrow D 3-1. This gave Alcester C an opportunity which they took by defeating Bidford C 3-1 to leave Alcester level with Inkberrow on 20 points apiece and with all to play for in the last week.
