Prudden Road Surfacing League

Press Release for Week 12.........10/07/2008

Week 12

As the Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League for the South Warwickshire and district area reaches its climax, Stratford cling onto their eight point lead despite being held to another draw 2-2 by Inkberrow. Moreton drop back to fourth as they are beaten by Stratford B and Evesham continue their recent revival by taking over Moreton’s third place with a 4-0 defeat of Inkberrow B.

With two draws on the trot having been held by their B Team last week, Stratford were a little tentative as no team is allowing them an easy victory. They were thankful of their early season points lead going into this match, especially when their reliable captain Tim Page with stand-in partner Chris Marrow went down in the opening rubber to Inkberrow’s skipper Alex Woodbridge & veteran Pete Watson 6-2, 2-6, 4-6. Fortunately for them on the other court Stratford team mates Richard Monk & Mark Parsons managed a good 6-4, 6-4 victory over Inkberrow’s Graeme Rankin & Tim Price. However, after the change they were then also beaten by Woodbridge & Watson 6-1, 6-4 and it was up to the Stratford captain to salvage pride. This they did as Page & Marrow beat Rankin & Price 6-3, 6-2.

Evesham continued their revival and took advantage of Moreton’s slip to finally climb back up to third place after their convincing victory over bottom side Inkberrow B. Despite the scoreline the Inkberrow side fought hard before going down as this result confirmed Inkberrow B as relegated to Division One next year. Simon Wall & John Clarke (Evesham) beat Chris Baker & Tim Kenneally (Inkberrow B) 7-6, 6-3, and beat Simon Baker & Craig Weedon (Inkberrow B) 6-4, 6-1. Paul Everatt & Ray Foster-Morison (Evesham) beat Baker & Weedon 6-2, 6-3, and then beat Baker & Kenneally 6-1, 7-5.

Moreton-in-the-Marsh were not only knocked from third place by their defeat to Stratford B this week but were in fact overtaken by them and now lie in fifth position. Stratford B opened in determined fashion taking both opening rubbers. Chris Cotteral & Nick Harper (Stratford B) beat Owain Thomas & Brian Lomas (Moreton) 6-1, 7-5. Meanwhile the strong partnership from previous years of Rob Slatter & Callum Bailey (Stratford B) defeated Will Hale & Garry Jackson (Moreton) 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. They then went on to beat Thomas & Lomas 6-2, 6-1. Cotteral & Harper went down to Moreton captain Hale & Jackson 2-6, 2-6.

The top three in Division One, Chipping Campden, Whitnash and Henley all claimed 3-1 victories in their battle for the title and promotion. Campden beat mid-table FISSC, Whitnash defeated lowly Claverdon and Henley had a good victory over fourth placed Bidford-on-Avon. A shock result saw relegation favourites bottom side Tanworth-in-Arden overcome Ardencote Manor 3-1.

With Studley enjoying a comfortable 4-0 win over Littleton B, Division Two leaders Alcester dropped a point in their 3-1 victory at Stratford C, but still look favourites for the title retaining a six point lead. Pershore were held to a 2-2 draw by Alcester B who with that result move clear of relegation worries. Finally, bottom side Aston Cantlow continue their battling form by holding fourth placed Redditch side HDA to a 2-2 draw and with that result drew level on points with Littleton B.

Division Three leaders Snitterfield retained their three point lead at the top as they drew 2-2 with second placed Claverdon B. Harbury jumped two places from fifth to third after two matches in a week. In the first they drew 2-2 with Shipston-on-Stour and in the second match they ran out 4-0 winners over Studley B, who as a result drop to bottom of the table. Previously third FISSC B drop a place after being held to a 2-2 draw with Shipston and a draw between Ilmington and Campden B gave a valuable two points to Campden and allowed them to climb off the bottom.

Both Division Four leaders Inkberrow C and second placed Moreton B enjoyed 3-1 victories over Claverdon C and Littleton C respectively. Third placed Bidford B went one better with a 4-0 whipping of Henley B which leaves Henley wallowing at the bottom and looking odds on to be relegated.

The major shock of the week occurred in Division Five when Shipston, previous leaders by nine points, lost to fourth placed Bidford C 3-1. Shipston’s lead was cut to seven when second placed Inkberrow D took advantage and beat third placed Alcester C 3-1. Finally, the bottom two teams HDA B and Campden C drew 2-2.
