Press Release for Week 11.........27/06/2008

Week 11

After being pegged back last week by Inkberrow, Stratford pulled away again this week opening up an eight point lead after a good 3-1 win over third placed Moreton-in-the-Marsh. Inkberrow were held to a 2-2 draw by Stratford B, while Evesham overtook the latter to reclaim fourth spot after they in turn beat Littleton 4-0 and in doing so force Littleton into the relegation zone with bottom placed Inkberrow B.

Stratford had an unsure start as Graham Marsh & Chris Marrow lost the opening rubber to Will Hale & Gary Jackson (Moreton) 6-1, 6-1. However, they came back after an epic struggle to beat Brian Lomas & Owain Thomas (Moreton) 7-5, 7-6. Meanwhile Stratford’s skipper Tim Page with partner Simon West found little difficulty defeating first Lomas & Thomas 6-2, 6-3, and then Hale & Jackson in a closer match 7-6, 6-3.

Inkberrow let themselves down when as the home side they could only field one pair and so started the match 0-2 down in rubbers. Their only pair Pete Watson & Tim Price saved them from a disastrous result by beating first Lawrence Dingley & Martin Rees (Stratford B) 6-1, 6-4, and then Mark Parsons & Callum Bailey (Stratford B)
6-3, 6-2.

The final fixture in the Premier Division saw an Evesham revival after poor form in recent weeks. They ground out an excellent 4-0 result over Littleton who now find themselves in real relegation trouble. Chris Francis & Simon Wall (Evesham) beat Ian Smith & Chris Elliott (Littleton) 6-4, 6-4, and beat Richard Herborne & Elliott Barrett (Littleton) 6-4, 6-4. Andrew Crowther & Julian Heath (Evesham) defeated Herborne & Barrett 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, and then beat Smith & Elliott 6-3, 6-4.

In Division One Chipping Campden now lead by six points after previously second placed Henley had to call their match off against Ardencote due to court problems. Campden themselves enjoyed a 3-1 win over Claverdon. Meanwhile Whitnash continued their recent run of form to move above Henley into second after they too defeated their Bidford opposition 3-1. FISSC moved up two places and out of the relegation zone when they beat bottom placed Tanworth-in-Arden 3-1.

The top two in Division Two both drew. Top side Alcester were held to a 2-2 draw by fourth placed HDA and Studley were extremely well held in a 2-2 draw by Alcester B. Pershore held on to third place with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Littleton B, while bottom side Aston Cantlow threw up the week’s surprise as they enjoyed their first win of the season at home 3-1 against fifth placed Stratford C.

Snitterfield stay clear at the top of Division Three after another thrillingly close match with third placed FISSC B who they edged out 3-1. Claverdon B nudged a point closer to the top after they proved too strong in beating Chipping Campden B 4-0. Ilmington moved further clear of relegation when they defeated Studley B 3-1.

In Divisions Four Inkberrow C extended their lead to five points after thrashing bottom placed Henley B 4-0. Moreton B consolidated their second position with a good win over third placed Bidford B. Littleton C lifted themselves away from the bottom of the table with a valuable 3-1 win against Claverdon C and in doing so they swapped places.

Division Five saw the clash of the top two sides as table topping Shipston B met Inkberrow D. While the result meant that Shipston B are the first team to be crowned Division Champions in the League the match itself proved an anti-climax as Shipston B cruised past Inkberrow D 4-0. Third placed Alcester C missed their opportunity to overtake Inkberrow as they were held to a 2-2 draw by HDA B. In the final fixture of the league bottom club Chipping Campden C managed to hold mid-table Bidford C to a 2-2 draw.
