Week 1...

The Prudden Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League, covering the South Warwickshire & District Area, began last week with Evesham, the early front runners from last year, again stamping their authority on the Premier Division, with a big 4-0 win over Stratford B at Stratford. Moreton-in-the-Marsh claim second place after they enjoyed a good win over fellow promotion side Inkberrow B 3-1. In the final match of the week Littleton drew 2-2 at home to their visitors Inkberrow’s first team.

With Champions Stratford-on-Avon having a free week, Evesham took their opportunity to set the pace and did so in style at their rival’s Swans Nest Lane venue. It was at the expense of the champion’s sister Stratford B. The Evesham first pair John Clarke & Simon White did not have things all their own way though and struggled early doors. They lost the opening set on a tie-break 6-7 to Stratford B’s Graham Marsh & Lawrence Dingley, before squaring the match more comfortably in the second set 6-2. The final and deciding set saw no quarter given as the Stratford pair took it to the wire before Clarke & White settled the matter in Evesham’s favour on another tie-break 7-6. On the other courts Andrew Crowther & Chris Francis were enjoying a slightly more comfortable victory 6-1. 7-5 over Stratford B pair Nick Harper and Paul Crocombe. After the change both matches went to three sets before Clarke & White beat Harper & Crocombe 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Crowther & Francis beat Marsh & Dingley 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.

Newly promoted Moreton-in-the-Marsh opened their campaign with am excellent 3-1 victory over fellow promotion side Inkberrow B. Will Hale & Gary Jackson for Moreton beat Chris Baker & Ashley Baldwin (Inkberrow B) 6-4, 6-0, and then beat Tim Kenneally & Rick Allan (Inkberrow B) 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile Jim Gosling & Owain Thomas (Moreton) defeated Kenneally & Allen 6-2, 6-2, but lost to Baker & Baldwin 3-6, 3-6.

In the closest tie of the week Littleton played host to Inkberrow and their top pair captain Sean Witheford & Richard Herborn took both their rubbers in straight sets beating Graham Rankin & Gordon Keir (Inkberrow) 6-3, 6-1, and then Pete Watson & Tim Price (Inkberrow) 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Unfortunately for Littleton their second pair Andrew Reynolds & Zak Wilson suffered the reverse fortune of losing to Watson & Price 5-7, 0-6 and also to Rankin & Keir 5-7, 6-7.

Division One side Chipping Campden began with a win over Henley-in-Arden 3-1 with Campden captain Ken Dawson & partner Tom Wilson taking maximum points although Campden were made to fight every step of the way. Tanworth-in-Arden entertained Bidford-on-Avon in the pouring rain before the two clubs shared their usual opening season draw 2-2. The match between FISSC and Claverdon was called off because of waterlogged courts. This match will be re-arranged within 14 days as per the rules. The final game saw a meeting of two newly promoted sides with last year’s Division Two Champions Whitnash travelling to Ardencote Manor. The result of the match which was not played until Sunday last was not in at the time of going to press.

Alcester and Stratford C lead the table in Division Two after they both dominated their matches winning 4-0, Alcester over Littleton B and Stratford C against HDA of Redditch. Both Alcester B and Pershore were leading 2-1 when floodlight curfews curtailed their matches which will need to be completed within 14 days. Alcester B led Aston Cantlow in a very close encounter, while Pershore also led Studley in their match.

Division Three saw Studley B take top spot after they saw off Campden B 4-0 in a flying start to the season. Ilmington and Shipston share second place after both enjoyed 3-1 victories, Ilmington over FISSC B and Shipston at the expense of Claverdon B. In the league’s final fixture of the opening week Snitterfield shared the spoils with Harbury in a 2-2 draw. The fixtures for Divisions Four and Five do not begin until the week commencing 27th April.
